Belgian Pigeon Racers

In 1981, I was working at the Manitoba Museum. Steve Prystupa, Curator of Multicultural Studies, was facilitating a project on the history of Belgians in Manitoba. He asked me to photograph a group of men from the Belgian community. Pigeon racers… their elite athletes housed in dovecotes above the garage. Andrew Baert and Roger Jodts were wonderful ambassadors for and passionate about their sport. And all were generous with their time.

As always, I welcome comments and/or additional information. First up is a slide show, to see the photos and the captions scroll down.

  1. There is an open question in biology of whether the human species evolved or whether they co-evolved with 5 or 6 threr species. It is possible a human without the companionship of a non human is not human at all.

  2. Love these! I remember going with you for some of them… Long time ago! Reminds me of our pigeons, those that Norm used to take from their nests under the railroad bridge. Such great pets! We used to take them with us on our Sunday travels to the country, so they could fly around there. Never lost one; they always flew back to us!
