In 1984, while attending a peace celebration at the Manitoba Legislative grounds, a protest broke out. It was in response to Operation Blue Star; a military operation in Armritsar, Punjab India by the Indian Armed Forces conducted in June 1984, with the stated objective of removing leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and militants from the buildings of the Golden Temple, the holiest site of Sikhism. The Globe and Mail reported 250 deaths among those in the temple, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was among them.
Protest signs decried the death Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, condemned Indira Gandhi (who was also burned in effigy) and called for a boycott of Air India. Indira Gandhi was assassinated October 1984. On June 23 1985 Air India flight 182 exploded off the coast of Ireland.
